I’m thrilled to share that I have successfully passed the OET exam with a B grade in every subtest!
You don’t have to be great to start. But you have to start to be great
Taking the OET exam was definitely an intense journey, but with the right approach and preparation, it’s absolutely doable! Today, I want to share my experience and offer some tips on how to study for each subtest – listening, reading, writing, and speaking – to help you achieve your desired results.
Listening: To excel in the listening subtest, I found it crucial to practice active listening skills. Regularly listening to medical podcasts, lectures, and audio materials helped me enhance my understanding of different accents and medical terminologies. Additionally, taking online practice tests was immensely beneficial in improving my ability to comprehend the audio content accurately.
Reading: The reading subtest demands a good grasp of medical texts. Reading medical journals, articles, and textbooks on various healthcare topics not only broadened my knowledge but also helped me enhance my reading speed. I highly recommend summarizing and discussing the key points from the texts to improve comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Writing: Writing effectively in a medical context requires practice and familiarity with the OET writing criteria. I found it helpful to write sample letters and essays, paying attention to structure, coherence, and the use of appropriate medical language. Reviewing the official OET writing criteria and model answers provided valuable insights into the expectations of the examiners.
Speaking: The speaking subtest can be a bit nerve-wracking, but remaining relaxed and confident is key. Practicing with a language partner or tutor who provides feedback on pronunciation, fluency, and appropriate language use is incredibly valuable. It’s important to remember that the speaking criteria focus on effective communication with patients, so practicing role plays and mock conversations helped me simulate real-life scenarios.
One crucial aspect to bear in mind is understanding how the examiners correct your exam and what criteria they use. This knowledge is essential for targeting your preparation effectively. Familiarize yourself with the assessment guidelines, as they will guide you on how to structure your responses and maximize your chances of success.
I would also like to recommend the Swoosh English course as a fantastic resource for OET preparation.
I found their approach to be easy to follow and highly affordable. Their comprehensive materials, practice tests, and expert guidance greatly contributed to my success in the exam.
To all aspiring OET candidates, remember to stay relaxed and not let stress overwhelm you. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Visualize your success and approach the exam with confidence.
